Spotlight on Student Musicians

I’ve written a lot about the work that I do in my role as music minister on campus, but none of it would be possible without the other student musicians who volunteer their time and talent to praising the Lord through song. Here are some of the amazing people who make up our music ministry, each explaining why they like to be involved:

Cora Charron – Sophomore, majoring in Psychology.

Other campus involvement: Member of the Women’s Soccer Reserves Team.

“I love to sing and use my voice to give glory to God.”

Lily Glasgow – Sophomore, majoring in Nursing.

Other campus involvement: Lector for daily Masses at Saint Leo Abbey, member of Theta Phi Alpha and LEAD Scholars.

“I love the community! Everyone is so genuine and welcoming. We are built on a foundation that God made for us! Music ministry is a calling from God and I am so glad to be a part of it.”

Zariah Nicholas – Senior, majoring in Social Work.

Other campus involvement: University Ministry (Women’s Group).

“I like that I have the opportunity to share my talent, especially at the church. Singing those beautiful songs at the altar in front of the Lord is a feeling that I will never forget and something that I will treasure forever.”

Spencer Wallut – Sophomore, double majoring in Communication and Religious Studies.

Other campus involvement: Student Leader for University Ministry Men’s Group.

“I love playing the organ. I have played the piano since I was 5 but I stopped playing because I didn’t enjoy it. I have regained my love for music through playing the organ and even more so because it’s for the glory of God. In addition to the organ, I have found enjoyment in singing, and learning how to sing has been really fun. I also love learning about the rich heritage of sacred music in the Catholic Church and how to make the music in Mass more holy and reverent while lifting up the hearts of the faithful to better participate in mind and heart during the liturgy.”

Joseph Rubera – Junior, majoring in Business Management.

Other campus involvement: Member of the Scuba club, Chamber Singers, and the Clay Shooting team.

“I love to sing first off, and then I also love to glorify the Lord through singing at Mass when I can, I believe it is a great way to give back. Music ministry on campus is great, both Rosa Mills and Spencer Wallut are amazing musicians. It’s my pleasure to be able to use my talents to sing with them. I also love to sing Gregorian Chants! Another major factor in this is also learning to give of myself more when I can, to look outward and seek places where I can make an impact. This helps in a way, with the growth of virtue towards God. Thank you for letting me be a part of music ministry!”

Arianna Rodriguez – Senior, majoring in Political Science.

Other campus involvement: University Ministry, President of Imago Dei, member of Delta Nu, 3+3 Accelerated Pre-Law Program, Honors Program, Secretary for the Honors Student Association.

“I have been playing guitar since I was in second grade and only recently started playing for adoration since my junior year of high school.

“I originally was pretty nervous because I didn’t know how I would feel, but after my first time playing here I realized that I want to keep doing this. To me, music is very powerful and intimate, especially when using it as a way to praise the Lord. I want to bring people closer to God through the talents He has given me. Additionally, sometimes there are things I can’t express when trying to pray, so singing and playing music just helps me feel at peace and more in touch with myself and God.”

She additionally commented:

“Through music ministry I have learned so many new songs. I’m a very picky music person. It’s pretty hard for me to branch out and find new music that I like, but Rosa’s song choices have introduced me to a whole new variety of worship music!”

Michael Bogush – Senior, majoring in Business Management.

Other campus involvement: University Ministry’s Liturgical Preparation Student Leader, altar server and peer minister for Saint Leo Abbey, member of Imago Dei and the Scuba club.

“It allows me to serve the mass other than my normal duties as an altar server. I really enjoy music especially when it is praising the Lord, so being a part of this music ministry gives me a sense of joy. It also allows me to become a better singer with the support of the other ministers. As someone who might not always be able to sing during the mass, it is still a welcoming feeling that there is always a spot for those to join. Especially as a senior who first started to sing my junior year. And our amazing music leader does a fantastic job, getting the music ready and organizing for us before the practice and Mass! Great Job.”

I am so incredibly thankful for each of these amazing musicians, and even more grateful to be able to call them my friends. I would not be able to do the work that I do without them.

I would love to see you all comment down below with your thoughts on this post. Are you involved in any ministries at your church? How do you give your time, talent, and treasure to the Lord? What inspires you most about the dedication and passion of our student musicians?
